I think they were actually called palmetto bugs. Had them in our kitchen, hiding behind the cabinets with only their antennae poking out (ugh!) Smelled pretty bad when we squashed them... Had one on my uniform hat when I was on gate duty one night. I freaked out and my hat went flying across the road.
